March 1 is one of the most important holidays in Welsh culture, as it commemorates the death in the 6th century of the man considered to be the patron saint of Wales. Many legend and stories have grown around the life of Saint David (Dewi Sant in Welsh), including that he was the nephew of King Arthur.
Popular Symbols of St. David's Day
It's a longstanding tradition to wear a leek on St. David's Day. Apparently it dates back to a battle against the Saxons in which Saint David asked the Welsh army to wear leeks on their helmet so they could be easily differentiated from their enemies.
